Freeze on SEC teleconference

Highlights from Hugh Freeze’s time on the SEC teleconference. …

Opening Comments
We’re excited to have a victory last week over coach Price’s UTEP squad. They had played Oklahoma extremely tough the week before, and we were pretty concerned about that. We were fortuante to play well for three quarters. It will take us playing well for four quarters against Texas to be in the game and have a chance.

It means a lot to our fans to have a game like this in Oxford, and it will be a great atmosphere.

On Texas DC Manny Diaz
I don’t think it has any affect. Manny is a good guy and had a great relationship with some of these kids through the recruiting process. At the end of the day, they’ll still be close after the game. The prep for it, I don’t see it as an advantage one way or the other.

On Texas QB David Ash
The things they do around him are very complicated. They try to really confuse your eyes and your assignments, and that makes a kid like Ash even more difficult to defend.

On Trae Elston suspension
I did not hear about it until Monday afternoon probably around 2 was when I first got the word they were looking at it. By 5:30 I got the notification.

This is my first go round in the SEC. I understand the player safety at the forefront of our minds. When a flag wasn’t thrown on it it kind of leaves your mind after the game’s over. I did go and look at it from every angle I could find to see what they were seeing. The trajectory of his helmet at the end went to a tilt.

We’re disappointed we don’t have him, but have to still preapre and move forward. He had been playing quite a bit and is one of our more talented kids back there. We’re going to have Charles Sawyer, Cody Prewitt and Chief Brown to play more snaps and kind of have a three-man rotation back there. It hurst us also on special teams. He was on about every special team we have.

On the campus vibe for Texas
It’s pretty crazy. They’re expecting close to 100,000 people here on Saturday throughout the Grove and downtown. It’s pretty wild. It’s a hard ticket to get. I have a lot of people who are expecting me to come through for them, and I’m having trouble doing that. I’ll have 20 to 25 people who are upset with me. It will do wonders for us in recruiting.

On 2-0 start
We’ve played really good in some stretches, but we’ve done some bonehead things too throughout both games at times. The sitaution we’re in, playing with 74 scholarship guys, you recognize the mistakes we made in those (first two) games will be very difficult to overcome against Texas and the games we have coming up. It will be difficult to win those games if we don’t play more sound for the entire game.
