LSU survived with a win at Auburn, but that wasn’t enough to keep the Tigers No. 2 behind Alabama in the AP Top 25 as Oregon jumps in between the two SEC schools. From Baton Rouge, Scott Rabalais of The Advocate writes that LSU has kinks to work out. …

Speaking of Alabama, that’s this week’s opponent for Ole Miss, as the Rebels open SEC play, the last conference team to do so. From Tuscaloosa, Don Kausler writes that this week it’s the Rebels’ turn to test the Tide. Also from Tuscaloosa, Andrew Gribble writes that Alabama, which did not force at turnover in its 40-7 win over Florida Atlantic, wants to force more turnovers against Ole Miss, which fumbled six times, losing three, at Tulane. …

There was an announced crowd of a little more than 28,000 for the Ole Miss-Tulane game at the Superdome. That would almost fill the Green Wave’s proposed new campus stadium.

After Arkansas’ loss to Rutgers — with Tyler Wilson at quarterback — Wilson says the season becomes about “salvaging what we can salvage” for the Razorbacks, who began 2012 with national championship aspirations. …

Some coaches brush off the media when they don’t like a question or in the case of Nick Saban if you’re just writing too many good things about his team. It’s hard to tell why Steve Spurrier’s not taking questions these days. …

Shifting gears to basketball, an interesting read here from Brent Zwerneman, who covers Texas A&M for Houston and San Antonio, on former Texas A&M coach — and now former Texas Tech coach — Billy Gillispie. …
