The Eastern Division continues its resurgence behind Alabama. For the second straight week Ole Miss moves up after a loss. That won’t happen in next week’s rankings as struggling Auburn visits this week.

It appears the two hottest no name teams within the SEC at present would be the Florida Gators and Miss State Dawgs. Neither team draws any respect, except within their win column and unbeaten record.

They are ranked in the top 15 in the country. It is just the fact that Alabama and South Carolina have a better body of work that Florida. MississippiState has schedulingissues. This weekend will flesh out your concern with State in my opinion.

The problem for state is just as you commented, they haven’t played anybody yet. TN will be a better measuring stick in my opinion, so we will find out more about MSU this weekend. Only one of the teams state has beaten so far has a winning record, and combined they have 8 wins among them all, with several of the teams having only a single win all season, and we aren’t talking about really good programs to begin with for most of their opponents so far this year. Until they beat someone of substance, I don’t think state will move up much further unless other teams above them lose.

I’m not saying Mississippi State isn’t a solid, top 15 program at this point, all I’m saying is that they have yet to play a program that solidifies that. I believe this weekend will tell us alot about them. Their MOJO is their defensive secondary, so it should be a tough matchup for Tennessee. Then again, if they aren’t as good in the secondary as the numbers reflect, that will be exposed as well. Should be an interesting game.

What little I have seen of MSU hasn’t really impressed me a whole lot. They have the talent and they may just be playing down to the lesser teams that they have played so far, but so far they just seem like they are going through the motions of a game. Any game the last couple of years they seemed to play with more passion. Bring on a tougher foe and they may play like madmen and show out though. This stretch of game coming up will tell for sure where MSU ends up.
I can see Ole Miss with several more wins this season but moving up any further than 8 will be difficult unless the current 5-7 have complete meltdowns. South Carolina is a big suprise to me with how they are doing so far this year. If Alabama stumbles that going to throw a lot of things out of kilter.

Patrick, I still think Tyler Wilson as a potential stabilizing force for the offense gives Arkansas a chance for rapid improvement while LSU and Auburn – the West’s other under-achievers – struggles to find an answer there. The difference for LSU is it can struggle on offense while relying on a top 3 national defense. The Hogs were giving up 510 yards a game before they collided with Auburn’s offense. They still rank 102 or worse in 3 of the 4 major defensive categories. They’re No. 53 against the run.
