Kentucky fired its coach, Joker Phillips on Sunday, a day after the Wildcats lost 40-0 to Vanderbilt before sparse gathering at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington. Photos and news accounts of the crowd made it appear to be similar to the crowd of 23,283 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium when Ed Orgeron’s Rebels, in one of his final games, defeated Northwestern State 38-31.

Phillips’ firing comes on the same weekend of last season when his Wildcats defeated Ole Miss, and Houston Nutt was fired the following Monday. …

Ole Miss and Vanderbilt are each looking for a sixth win and bowl-eligiblity when Vanderbilt comes to town Saturday night. The Commodores have one of the nation’s toughest schedule but have bounced back from a 2-4 start to win three of their last four. …

After blowing by Ole Miss in the second half, Georgia coach Mark Richt told his players to expect a tough game at struggling Auburn this week. It’s a rival game for Georgia, and a win would secure a spot in the SEC championship game for the Bulldogs for a second-straight season. …

Alabama coach Nick Saban references the US Navy Seals in his lessons on how to deal with adversity. We made only one stop for gas in Alabama driving back from Georgia yesterday. It was somewhat early in a rural area, but the two people in the convenience story with alert and excited to talk about Alabama’s comeback win at LSU. …
