Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

Tommy Tuberville’s surprise exit from Lubbock has Texas Tech folks in search mode, and the top three targets are Chad Morris, Kliff Kingsbury and Sonny Dykes.

Dykes, the son of former Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes was very successful at Louisiana Tech, so successful that he was just named head coach at Cal. He also was a member of Mike Leach’s staff at Tech. If this report is correct, enough water has passed under the bridge for Tech to bring in someone who was close to the guy they let go in a much-publicized break-up.

You would think Dykes would be interested in the job, but would he be so interested that he would stiff Cal, who just hired him?

Kingsbury is the current offensive coordinator for Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M. He’s a former Tech QB who led the Red Raiders to a 42-28 win over Ole Miss and Eli Manning in Lubbock in 2002.

The Forth-Worth Star-Telegram has another plan in mind and suggests that Tech scrap this three-man list for two other choices …

On the coaching rumor front, can you envision Bobby Petrino at Arkansas State? Some folks can. …

From Knoxville, a look at how Butch Jones’ staff at Tennessee might come together. …

Memphis-Whitehaven running back Mark Dodson, a long-time Ole Miss commit, will announce for the second time his college choice in a presser this morning. Vandy has made a recent push. Dodson says he’ll not only commit but sign and enroll early at either school. …

Excuse me, but Ole Miss did NOT lose to Texas Tech in any Cotton Bowl. Ole Miss beat Texas Tech in ALL three bowl games they’ve played each other in:

    Jan. 2, 2009 Cotton Bowl – Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 34

    Dec. 31, 1998 Independence Bowl – Ole Miss 35, Texas Tech 18

    Dec. 20, 1986 Independence Bowl – Ole Miss 20, Texas Tech 17

Ole Miss lost at Texas Tech in a regular season game in 2002.

I will agree with PA here, but not entirely: Ole Miss did lose to Texas Tech Sept. 14, 2002
Texas Tech, Lubbock 28 42, but the QB probably Romano MIller NOT than Eli.

Nope, QB was Eli Manning. Big hype game (on ABC?) about a showdown between Eli and Kliff Kingsbury.

Eli passed for more than 400 yards in a losing cause. I was there. Enjoyed visiting Lubbock but was glad to be there for a football weekend and not a baseball regional that could extend to five days. On the Friday evening Jim Mashek, formerly of the Sun Herald, and I went to an old-style steakhouse, lots of pictures of old Southwest Conference games on the walls … a neat place.
