Here’s a look back at Ole Miss football practice from our friend Hayden Sowers …
Ole Miss finished up practice for the week with a short 60 minute workout that started with something unusual, a coaches vs players 7 on 7 game that ended in double OT with the players coming out on top 29-28. “I’d probably have to give the MVP to Gilbert Pena. He and big Justin Bell showed some skill out there. It was a lot of fun,” HC Hugh Freeze said after practice. The game ended when CJ Johnson batted down a pass intended for WR coach Grant Heard that would have won the game for the coaches.
What were the stakes for the game? “They challenged us in our team meeting today that if they won we would not do individual drills today. They beat us so individuals for them today.”
- I’tavious Mathers continued to run the ball well today capping off a strong week of bowl practices for the freshman RB. Mathers rarely is tackled on the first contact and always seems to fall forward when he is eventually tackled. With the Rebels resting Jeff Scott and Randal Mackey most of the week Mathers got most of the carries in practice and proved why he was Tennessee’s Gatorade Player of the Year last year.
- LB Temario Strong continued to impress today, “It was fun to watch Temario just go out and play some,” Defensive Coordinator Dave Wommack said after practice. “I thought he did a good job physically this week. He likes to hit and run around, but the spring will be big for him to learn the defense.”
- Ole Miss is off until December 27th when they will report back to Oxford. The Rebels will practice in Oxford until January 1st before reporting to Birmingham for the BBVA Compass Bowl.
