Bowl game numbers

From Jon Solomon of The Birmingham News, good numbers compiled by Winthrop Intelligence on the bowl games.

Bowl attendance continues to decline. One major exception this year was the BBVA Compass Bowl where Ole Miss fans helped the bowl have the highest increase in attendance from one season to the next — that increase some 18,000 fans better than the next best bowl to see an increase. The Compass Bowl (59,135) ranked ninth in overall attendance among the 35 bowl games. It ranked No. 4 among the non-BCS games behind the Chick-Fil-A, Alamo and Capital One bowls.

Knowing in advance the large numbers were coming the Compass Bowl still struggled with parking issues — not a first for Legion Field –  as well as concessions and technical problems.

Not much of a reward for the fans who helped put the game in the limelight.

    The Compass Bowl did not just “struggle” with concessions, I think someone must have eaten them before the game started. How could you be out of everything before the end of the first quarter. A disgrace to B’ham for its handling of the concessions and gates.
    My first post, but I really enjoy your information on here, Parrish.

    Like I said, who would pick Birmingham for a bowl spot? The town can’t support it, no to mention, there is nothing to do. The best thing they could find for our players to be entertained was a comedy club. Glad the Rebels got a bowl, but B’ham is a hole.

    Dwood, I was trying not to overstate it. I know about the concessions from stories I heard but did not experience that first hand. I did experience the lack of functioning wireless access in the press box. That’s a basic requirement for our jobs these days, and most events can pull off wireless access.

    Irish, I have no problem with Birmingham as a host. Entertainment for the players doesn’t have to be going out somewhere. The Cotton Bowl does a lot of entertaining by putting on a party and bringing entertainment in. It would be unfair to judge the Compass Bowl by Cotton Bowl standards, but it seemed to me the player events were fairly routine. Part of the “wow” factor with the Cotton Bowl also has to do with the hospitality rooms at the various hotels. I don’t know what that looked like for the players at the Sheraton.
