I’ve seen some folks scoffing at the verbal commitment of four-star running back Kailo Moore to Ole Miss.
It’s Moore’s third verbal commitment, his second to the Rebels sandwiched on each side of a commitment to rival Mississippi State.
Of course, people want to take off on the word “commitment,” which is fair. It’s taken on a definition of its own in recruiting. But it’s not like Moore is the first redefine the word.
The bottom line is it’s better for a high school player to think it through, take his time and make the right decision on the front end than to have uncertainty about his choice then spend a year in discontent and transfer out of the program with which he signs. That’s bad for both sides.
I covered a guy in Meridian, Dexter McCleon, who had trouble choosing between Clemson and Alabama. He went on to be a first-team All-ACC defensive back and played with the Rams in the Super Bowl in 2000.
All stories don’t end that way.
Moore is the fourth running back in the Ole Miss class, and the Rebels return three of their top four running backs, two of them freshmen.
That’s a lot of competition at the position. If all the commits sign it wouldn’t be a total surprise to see someone in the group of seven play somewhere else.
