Calling on Holloway, Buckner

In mild sort of way, Andy Kennedy got his point across in a manner that would stop short of “calling out” the two most experienced players in his program.

Nick Williams, another senior, will be back against Mississippi State, and that’s huge for Ole Miss, but it was Murphy Holloway and Reggie Buckner to whom Kennedy delivered a message through the media Monday afternoon.

Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy would like to see Murphy Holloway increase his production Wednesday night against MSU.

Holloway – though he had the strange transfer to South Carolina in the middle – and Buckner have played all of their game action under Kenned. Williams, a Mobile native, spent a year at Indiana before transferring.

The message no doubt had already been delivered, and we were used as a method of reinforcement.

Kennedy went into the Florida game wanting to get Buckner very involved offensively. He had hoped for 15 field goal attempts from Buckner, who attempted four.

Holloway is still averaging a double-double, but he’s just 9-for-30 from the floor in the last two games.

Buckner went through a stretch where he scored in double figures five out of six games, but he’s averaged just five points over the last three games without reaching doubles.

“Murphy going 9-for-30 the last two games, shooting the ball 10 feet and in, obviously we’re not going to be very successful with that. Reg has not scored double figures in the last two games. We made a concerted effort of going to him. We tried to give him touches on the block early. He just wasn’t as effective as we need him to be. Those two guys are huge for us, and they know that,” Kennedy said.

Holloway, who spoke at Monday’s presser, said the biggest thing he needs to do is slow down and stop rushing things.

Holloway averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games against MSU last year.

When the Rebels won in Oxford, Buckner had a monster game with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

He was pretty good in Starkville too with 15 points and nine rebounds.
