Pitching returned and offense remained as Ole Miss baseball won 8-3 Saturday to clinch the series at Florida International.
Mike Mayers had been pretty good in two no-decision starts, both Ole Miss wins. In his third start Mayers went a season-long seven innings with six hits, two runs, both earned, no walks and six strikeouts.
Freshman left-hander Jeremy Massie pitched the last two innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run but walking none.
The Rebels (10-1) had 11 hits with three of the top four in the order – Tanner Mathis, Austin Anderson and Stuart Turner – getting two hits each. Ole Miss also got three hits from its eight- and nine-hole batters, two from Preson Overbey in the eighth slot and one from Will Jamison.
Sophomore Chis Ellis will start in today’s game 3 which begins at 11 a.m.
