Insell Introduced

New women’s basketball coach Matt Insell was introduced this morning at the Gillom Center.

He’s 30 years old and says age is just a number, not a big deal. He has grown up around women’s basketball, the son of Middle Tennessee coach Rick Insell.

Matt’s career has been mostly around the women’s game, though when he could have taken a women’s job he chose to work at Tennessee under former coach Buzz Peterson to “learn the men’s side” in an effort to make himself a stronger women’s coach.

Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork first drew the distinction today saying that Insell was “born to coach women’s basketball.”

Bjork talks here about the history of women’s basketball at Ole Miss:

Insell will have four years at $400,000 base salary with incentives based on regular season performance, postseason. “Kind of our typical contract,” Bjork said.

He’ll have $390,000 to pay three assistants. “That’s pretty competitive in our conference,” Bjork said. Insell has filled two slots and has one assistant left to hire.

As part of its self-imposed sanctions after former coach Adrian Wiggins and two of his assistants were fired last October Ole Miss reduced its scholarships from 15 to 13 for seasons 2013 and 2014. Insell will have four scholarships to work with in the spring signing period. He may not sign that many, he says.

Insell says he’ll play an up-tempo style on both offense and defense.

He says he wants to play the best teams and that he’ll “call Geno” about the possibility of UConn playing Ole Miss in Oxford.

In one of the announcement’s lighter moments, Bjork was getting ready for the big finish when he introduced as “your new head football coach.” He quickly caught himself but not before good-natured laughter broke out. No one seemed to mind, even Freeze, who was in attendance standing in the doorway when he shrugged his shoulders as if to say, “What’s going on?”

Wow! The Bovine/Canine college football recruiting violations must be worse than they have been saying! How long before the NCAA gives Mullen the “death penalty?”
