Wahl will go in Game 2

Ole Miss right-hander Bobby Wahl, named second-team All-SEC earlier today, will not start in the first game of the Raleigh Regional Friday.

Rebels coach Mike Bianco has announced that Wahl will instead throw in Game 2, presumably against North Carolina State power left-hander Carlos Rodon, who leads the nation in strikeouts with 151.

Wahl is 9-0 with a 1.99 ERA, Rodon 8-2 with a 3.48 ERA.

This is the move to make and gives the Rebels their best chance to win the regional.

If this is indeed the matchup in the second round, and if Wahl and Rodon are on top of their games, it could be a quick evening of baseball.

It’s worth noting, though, that sometimes holding the ace doesn’t work out. I was kidding Stephen Head yesterday about the “Grady Hinchman” game. In 2004, the first time Ole Miss hosted a regional, Bianco held Mark Holliman and Hinchman pitched Western Kentucky to a 1-0 win with a two-hitter. Holliman lost against Washington the next morning, and the Rebels went 0-2.

So they are taking a gamble hoping to match Wahl up against Carlos Rodon. Florida State beat NC State twice this season but lost the first game 3-1. Rodon beat them. I don’t like saying this since I am a Gator fan but I like the Rebels too, So not trying to taking anything from Ole Miss but I think FSU is the better team. FSU took two of three from the Gators this season Gators took two of three from Ole Miss – now back to Ole Miss NC State, first of all NC State and Ole miss must win their first game in the Regional to pull off this matchup between Wahl and Rodon.. Binghamton or William and Mary could be a party crasher and come away with all the champagne.
