Wommack talks about several players

Just going through some of the media day audio files here, and there were some very frank comments from Dave Wommack about some of his defensive players.

On LB Denzel Nkemdiche: “A lot of times guys get so much credit, he’s one of the Nkemdiche brothers, and they get a lot of this and that, was a freshman All-American, well-deserved. They’ll have a tendency to do like we did as a team versus Texas last year and try to make every play, not read their keys. We’ve talked to him about that a lot. He wants to be a leader, wants to do what’s right, and he wants to play within the system, so we may have to reign him in at times, because that’s his personality. That makes him Denzel, but he’s aware of that.”

On DE CJ Johnson: “If you had to sk me who’s the best player on this defense, the player that made a difference for us last year, I’d say CJ. Having that speed rusher, and in our system, having that guy that’s kind of a hybrid defensive end who can play linebacker … that makes a difference to us.”

On DE Carlos Thompson: “I said a minute ago that there’s a little drop-off behind CJ, but Carlos did some really good things this spring. I’m anxious to see how Carlos progresses.

On DT Woodrow Hamilton: “Woody Hamilton’s an athletic guy. I love Gilbert Pena, but Woody can do a lot of things that Gilbert couldn’t do.”

On DE John Youngblood: “A guy that doesn’t really get any credit is John Youngblood. He doesn’t make mistakes. He’s a guy that nobody’s going to say much about, but you watch John Youngblood. He’ll make a difference, and he’ll help our team win games.”
