Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning. …

The Rebels will be back on the practice field today, but they’re setting their clocks back. Wanting to see how his team will respond under the lights, Hugh Freeze will bring them all together at 8:15 this evening.

That will be the kickoff time for the Aug. 29 opener at Vanderbilt.

Speaking of the Commodores …

The four Vanderbilt players dismissed this summer for their alleged roles in a campus rape case had not been among the Commodores’ more productive players.

That’s not true for Chris Boyd, who was suspended indefinitely Friday. Boyd was Vanderbilt’s second-leading wide receiver and ranked fourth in total offense a year ago.

More on Boyd here.

Boyd’s status for the Aug. 29 opener against Ole Miss is unclear. Meanwhile, it’s a very different Vanderbilt offense without him, writes Jeff Lockridge of the Tennessean. Vanderbilt practiced without Boyd for the first time Saturday night. …

Vanderbilt begins the 2013 season on a seven-game win streak. Like Ole Miss, the Commodores won convincingly in their bowl game last year. Both Vanderbilt and Ole Miss are in the receiving votes category of the first Associated Press Top 25.

To no one’s surprise, Alabama is the initial No. 1, but Athlon did some digging and tells us that being No. 1 at the start of the year and the end of the year is a rare thing indeed.

Speaking of Alabama, the Tide made some off-field news Sunday when reserve defensive back Gene Smith was arrested for DUI.

Also across the eastern border, there are several similarities between last year’s Ole Miss and this year’s Auburn. One of them is the fact that Auburn will start a first-year junior college transfer at quarterback. Read about Nick Marshall here.

From Fayetteville, the Arkansas News Bureau reports a rough week of injuries for the Razorbacks.
