From Columbia (the South Carolina one), there are high expectations for defensive end Jadeveon Clowney this year — Heisman expectations — and early reports are that he’s having a pretty solid camp.

I’ve heard more than one person — including Ole Miss linebacker Mike Marry — compare the Rebels’ freshman end Robert Nkemdiche to Clowney.

Nkemdiche has also had a good camp and seems to carry himself in a manner of football maturity.

If people are comparing him to Clowney at the end of the year it will have been a really good debut season for Nkemdiche. …

I guess you could call this C-USA’s revenge. The SEC bowl tie-ins include Shreveport, downtown Birmingham and the aging Liberty Bowl stadium. C-USA apparently has new tie-ins with Boca Raton and the Bahamas. C-USA also extended its existing contract with the Hawaii Bowl. …

From Athens, Georgia cornerback Sheldon Dawson says the Bulldogs will be more aggressive this year. Georgia, pretty good last year, opens with Clemson. …

From Lexington, Tubby Smith, now the Texas Tech coach, is going into the Kentucky Hall of Fame. He won a national championship with the Wildcats but didn’t leave on the best of terms.  …
