Ole Miss sophomore linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche was named preseason All-SEC first team by the league coaches, the SEC office announced today.
Six Ole Miss players were selected.
WR Donte Moncrief and P Tyler Campbell made the second team, DE CJ Johnson, CB Charles Johnson and OL Aaron Morris the third team.
Nkemdiche, in camp somewhat overshadowed by questions about his freshman brother, was also the Rebels’ only first-team representative when the media picked its preseason All-SEC team at Media Days in mid-July.
Moncrief was also second team then.
That team included Jeff Scott as a third-team running back as well as Johnson and Sawyer on the third team.
Campbell was overlooked by the media, but the coaches obviously haven’t forgotten that he led the NCAA in punting as a sophomore with a 46.4-yard average. He lost about three yards off the average when coaches changed his style as a junior. A greater emphasis was placed on “rugby” style punts, which allowed Campbell to increase his number of punts downed inside the 20.
Campbell can be a real field position weapon this season.
