Depth chart notes and observations

A few observations on the first official depth chart.

OL – Jared Duke had a good camp, and it will be interesting to see if that translates to playing time. Aaron Morris was a third-team preseason All-SEC pick by the coaches, but he had some attitude adjustment time in camp while Duke ran with the first team.

At the other guard spot, Justin Bell is listed ahead of Patrick Junen, a product of in some way of Bell’s playing time in camp while Junen was out with injury and riding the stationary bike. Bell is not completely healthy either, and I suspect it will take both of them to get through a game.

Freshman Kailo Moore is not listed among the running backs, but I think you’ll see him. There was a lot of effort to get Moore the ball in space during camp through quick tosses and short passes.

Former walk-on Jordan Holder is listed second at slot receiver. Based on the reps he got in camp that’s legit, but I would be surprised if Evan Engram, Jaylen Walton or Moore don’t show up there in some capacity. With the injury to Korvic Neat slot receiver has gotten thin in name, but there are options Hugh Freeze can put in that position.

How much Freeze chooses to play a running back in the slot could have a trickle down effect on what running backs play. There is lots of talent but little experience behind Jeff Scott, and it’s possible that freshmen Mark Dodson and Jordan Wilkins could get caught up in the numbers. It’s those numbers, however, that will allow Scott to be the primary punt returner, which the Rebels sorely need.

Defensively, it didn’t take Robert Nkemdiche long to run with the ones, and he deserves it. It does create a unique story line, though, to have a true freshman pass a senior on the depth chart. Cameron Whigham will help, particularly in the run game. End is a fairly deep position right now when add DT Shackelford and Channing Ward into the mix. Carlos Thompson has gotten a lot of reps too.

Interesting to see Woodrow Hamilton ahead of Issac Gross at nose. Again, an injury played in there, but there are high expectations for Hamilton. Keep an eye on him.

Quintavius Burdette and Dehendret Collins are both listed first at their respective corner positions, but their names are followed by an “or,” which means there’s not a full-blown endorsement on their behalf. Still, these guys are going to have to play. Senquez Golson and Charles Sawyer, the returning starters, have missed too much camp time for their conditioning not to be affected.

It’s unfortunate that Ole Miss begins the season against one of the top receivers in the league — Jordan Matthews — and perhaps two depending on the status of Matthews’ running mate Chris Boyd. Boyd is currently suspended for his alleged role in the Vanderbilt rape case.

Will Kmdechi get suspended for his violence at that frat party? Just the beginning of thuggary at Ole Miss.

My friend that’s the first I have heard of this. I guess this toddy toddy thing get a little wild up there in oxford since the have started serving beer to minors.. anyway, i have Ole miss losing to Vandy by 3 points.

      • Lee814

It’s the first you’ve heard of this because there is no truth to it. Cid has no concern with the truth. He only wants to spew rumors without any facts to back them up. He found that on another message board. If he would have checked a little further, he would have seen that this same rumor was also posted months ago. But don’t bother Cid with the facts.

        • Cid Riley

Facts? Facts? We talkin bout facts, man

          • Bob

well then, we will wait for your proof. You do know that when you accuse someone proof is required, right? Otherwise you are just a cowardly scumbag who makes baseless accusations against 18 year old boys who you don’t even know anything about except that he is an excellent football player and he is on a team that you don’t happen to like.

          • RebelGuy007

The only facts that I know is that Ole Miss kicked MSU ass last year and will continue to so while bringing in top recruiting class. Did I hurt your little feelings Cid? I’m sure I can hurt more than that if you came out of your mom’s basement.

    • Bob

It’s one thing when you make up stuff about a school that you don’t like. it’s quite another when you make up things about an 18 year old young man that you know nothing about. Only the lowest of scum would do that. You should be ashamed denigrating this young man like that.

      • Cid Riley

I’m just keeping it real…bra! I’m like the stench on your feet…I ain’t goin away…

        • handy010

Yes Buell Dag, you are EXACTLY like a stench

  • REB

Thats telling him, Bob. Between that and another saying they are “serving beer to minors”, it looks like we have a duo working on blind hate for Ole Miss.

  • Cid Riley

Sweep it under the proverbial rug….it’s the Ole Miss way. #olemissprobation2014

I heard there was a burglary at a local pharmacy…fact or fiction?

  • Cid Riley

I heard Vandy owns Ole Miss on the football field…something like 5 in a row. Fact or fiction???

  • Cid Riley

I heard Ole Miss has lost 3 of the last 4 Egg Bowls..Fact or fiction???

  • Cid Riley

I heard that Ole Miss has had 2 seasons in the last 5 seasons where they didn’t win one sec football games…Fact or fiction???

  • Cid Riley

I heard that Ole Miss has never been to the sec championship game in the last 40 years…Fact or fiction????

  • Cid Riley

I heard that Ole Miss has a lifetime invitation to the Idaho Potatoes Bowl..Fact or fiction???

  • Cid Riley

Well gee Bob, I guess I never thought about it like that. You’ve right, claiming things that didn’t happen would be like Ole Miss claiming a National Championship and hanging banners. Heehee!!! #olemissprobation

Last year I went on the old message board (OM and MSU) and made some predictions about the season. I said that OM would surprise a lot of folks. While most were predicting 2-3 wins for OM, I said they would win 5-6. I also said, that as far as improvement, OM would have a lot better season than MSU. OM was about 5 plays from winning 9 regular season games. All of OM losses came to top 25 teams. MSU, on the other hand, only had one win against a team with a winning record and that win over MTSU can hardly be called a big win. Most of their losses were blowouts. Had MSU had the same schedule as OM last year, they would have finished 5-7 with no bowl game (ie: Vanderbilt, instead of Kentucky, South Carolina, instead of Tennessee, and Texas, instead of JSU.)
According to sources, OM had the toughest schedule in the SEC last year, and MSU had the 11 toughest. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1188899-sec-football-2012-power-ranking-the-schedules-from-easiest-to-toughest/page/5.

I believe Ole Miss will continue to improve this year, winning 8-9 games. They will not surprise as many this year. Teams will be prepared. However, I believe OM has the depth to make some of those big 5 plays move in their favor this year.

On the other hand, MSU will continue to be mediocre and will finish with 5-6 wins. I said last year that within two years folks would be calling for Mullins to be fired. We’ll see if that happens this year or next.

In four day we shall see what the Rebels have to offer when they go up against a team that always have had that invisible advantage against them. I still give Vandy a 3 point edge, but we shall await and see what prediction PA Will put up on the board. Odds could change, Its really going to be an interesting season for Ole Miss since they reeled in one of the best recruiting group out there and just how they will use that group of talent. Down here in Gator land we are rooting for you Rebels and hope to see you soon..

    • RebelGuy007

Your right about how Vandy always seems to play Ole Miss really well, but Ole Miss has the more talented team on paper and on the field. Look for the Ole Miss to score often and the defense to stuff Vandy’s running game with well result in them trying to pass with Ole Miss defenders all over their QB. Prediction: Ole Miss 31 Vandy 10

The NCAA handed down sanctions to the Mississippi State football program on Tuesday and placed the Bulldogs on probation for two years.

As part of the sanctions four scholarships were stripped and four
recruiting visits have been lost. Mississippi State offered to
self-impose those penalties, and the NCAA accepted.

Former wide receivers coach Angelo Mirando was also cited for unethical conduct.

All of this stems from an NCAA investigation which revealed that the team had improper contact with cornerback recruit Will Redmond.
A report on the investigation released Friday, also reveals that
Redmond received improper benefits from a booster. The benefits
reportedly included cash and the use of vehicles.

“The booster befriended a top Mississippi State recruit and began
arranging for him to use cars, gave him cash and provided other
benefits,” the report stated. “During the recruitment, the booster
exchanged more than 100 phone calls with the recruit, assisted the
recruit in securing a car to drive to a campus visit and provided cash
to the recruit on multiple occasions. Additionally, the booster and his
friend provided a car to the recruit for approximately $2,000 below the
actual value of the car. Prior to taking an official visit to a
different university, the booster told the recruit that if he did not
take the visit, the recruit would be paid $6,000.”

Who is this Buell Dagg you speak of?? The stench you’re smelling is the smell of a stinky fish…otherwise known as a recruiting scandal…….#olemissprobation2014
