Freeze on SEC teleconference

Highlights from Hugh Freeze’s time on the SEC teleconference:

Opening Statement

We’re very excited to come out of Nashville with a win. Lot of momentum changes. We were fortuante to win it. I know coach Franklin and his staff and kids, I was disappointing for them. They have a wonderful football team.

Excited to get back in our home opener. Several changes to have happened in the look of our stadium that we’re excited to reveal to everyone.

On DT Shackelford

You want to do everything within your power to make sure he has the opportunity to have success. You’ve seen him go through the journey, the years away, to fight and persevere and come back from those, you want to see him succeed and contribute in a way that’s gratifying to him. You know what he’s put into it, and you know the type of kid he is. I’m excited that he’s playing a role, and I hope that role increases.

There were times in my mind I was not sure he would ever make it back. He was able to put those negative thoughts behind him and continue to work toward his goal of playing again.

On Freshmen

I was a bit surprised that some of them had those types of games. The biggest surprise, I knew Laquon had ability. I had no idea he’d go out and have nine catches. Some of that you could attribute to Donte Moncrief, because they tried to keep the coverage rolled over him most of the night, and that opened up windows for Laquon.

Austin Golson and Evan really had nice games. We weren’t even sure Austin would play, and he ended up playing the entire second half. Evan played a lot of snaps and performed well.

I was a bit surprised in a good way.

Focus vs. SEMO

We don’t talk about the next game, but they’re probably thinking some of that. I’ve been extra critical and demanding that we focus on winning today. Our staff has followed suit. We approach every game the same, just like every staff.

Coming off a game where we won but made a lot of mistakes has helped us. You can coach them a bit harder at 1-0 than 0-1. We’ve had a ton of mistakes to clean up, so that’s helped. They see when they come to the complex each afternoon that our coaches are focused on this game.

On Jeff Scott

Could not be happier for any kid. From the first time I got here I didn’t think there was any way he would survive and be in our program. He’s doing things right, living right, making good academic choices. For him to make a game-changing play like that I was thrilled for him.
