Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning. …

It was nice to have a Saturday off and spend some time around the TV on a college football Saturday. It was disappointing that there were more exciting games and matchups.

That won’t be the case this week when LSU visits and Georgia. I think Ole Miss visiting Alabama will prove to be good viewing as well.

Georgia beat writers were reporting on Sunday that Bulldogs coach Mark Richt has given Tammy Mettenberger the week off. She works in the football office at Georgia, and she’s the mother of LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger, the one-time Georgia signee.

Tragedy strikes at Cincinnati where a freshman player is killed and two others are injured in a one-car accident. Comments from former Ole Miss coach Tommy Tuberville, now at UC, in the story.

Also, a Clemson player apparently escaped serious injury in a one-car accident that killed another man.

Stories like that put the game in perspective.

Ole Miss defensive back Carlos Davis is eager to get back on the field.

Tom Allen, the Rebels’ special teams coach, is eager to get him back. A walk-on running back, Davis developed as an integral part of special teams with his play as the “gunner” on coverage units.

Then he was forced to sit out the first six games this season as the result of confusion over his initial eligibility last year.

In the off-season Davis was moved to cornerback. In a perfect world it’s unlikely Davis would have seen playing time at corner, but with the problems the Rebels have had there, you never know. He’d have been a welcome addition to the mix in August, another option for coaches to work with and consider. …
