McCray will play inside some

One of the more interesting tid-bits from Tuesday was offensive line coach Matt Luke telling us that senior left tackle Emmanuel McCray would begin to play more on the inside at guard.

That’s a move made possible by the continued rise of freshman Laremy Tunsil at left tackle.

Here’s Luke:

Luke has always said he’s about playing his best five linemen regardless of position.

The interior has been a work in progress because of injuries in August. It’s also the only position where a starter did not return, that begin A.J. Hawkins at right guard.

There have been lots of bodies there when healthy — Justin Bell, Patrick Junen, senior Jared Duke and freshman Austin Golson.

It will be interesting to see what role might develop at guard for McCray. He’s played the position before, but it’s been a while.

Though they’re better than last year, this is still a group that needs to develop more physicality in short-yardage situations. McCray might help improve that.

Ole Miss has at least 7 true freshmen playing key roles on offense, defense, and special teams. Not many teams would be 3-1 playing the teams that Ole Miss has played with that many freshmen holding key roles. I said on Sunday that this Saturday will set the tone for Ole Miss. Are they a team with lots to look forward to in years to come or are they a team that is special this year. 9-3 will be special this year based on everyone saying Ole Miss will have 7 or 8 wins this year. I believe that if they win the Auburn game, they will be special.

In the USA Today bowl projections this week they have this Chick-fil-A Bowl: Ole Miss vs. Notre Dame. They also have 12 of the 14 SEC teams in bowl games. I know this is only week 6 of the season and things will change, but it goes to the statement that the SEC is not the best conference top to bottom.

Ole Miss Coaches and players are doing great. Our coaches are working very hard behind the scenes. I don’t feel we were out coached at Alabama either. Simply a recruiting class or two away. That Alabama defensive line is very hard to run against. And to beat Alabama a team is going to have to run a good bit, most likely at least in my opinion. A break or two going our way would have also helped. Another good recruiting class and Ole Miss will be even more competitive than we are now. Auburn awaits and I feel our team is in the best possible hands to have the best possible chance at victory. Coach Freeze has put together a very impressive group of coaches to help him and I think this will pay off big. I think I speak for 99.9% of the Rebel Nation in saying, Hats off and thank you to all of our coaches and to each and every player on the team. We’re behind you 100%.
