Monday Press Conference Notebook

Hugh Freeze was taking care of some personal business today, and Matt Luke, assistant head coach, filled in.

- “Being bowl eligible two years in a row was part of our goals. We’re not satisfied but very excited about that.”

- Luke felt like the Rebels were somewhat sluggish against Arkansas. The constant theme for the last three games is “focus.”

- Injuries: DE John Youngblood questionable, S Chief Brown (Stinger) probable. RB Jeff Scott. “We’ll look at Jeff Scott and see if he can practice tomorrow. Coach Freeze will be back to answer questions about the injuries. We’ll know a lot more after tomorrow’s practice.”

- Troy has a “tremendous” senior quarterback. “He’s very, very good,” Luke said. They play a lot of man coverage and blitz a bunch. We’ll have our work cut out for us and will have to a really really good job to beat those guys.”

- Luke: “They are a pressure-oriented defense and move around a lot to counter not being very good.”

- Luke praised his freshman left tackle, Laremy Tunsil, this week’s offensive lineman of the week, nothing that Tunsil fought off sickness to play against Arkansas. “Guys like that don’t come around that often,” Luke said.

While Freeze and Luke both used the word “sluggish” to talk about the Arkansas game, quarterback Bo Wallace doesn’t believe that will be a trend that repeats itself this week against a lower-level Division 1 team in a buy-out home game.

“I don’t think so. Our mindset is so much on nine wins. We know we have to be prepared to play, and we have to reach that goal.”

- Wallace talked after the game about wanting to be better on third downs.

“Every face of third down. I have the third down calls on Thursday, and I’ll write down my top eight third-down plays. Coach Werner knows that, for each situation, third- and long, short, medium. I think that’s helped me a little bit, and the third down plans have been really good the last several weeks.”

Wallace said he didn’t write down third-down plays last year.
