Contractual awareness

I had an interesting conversation with Hugh Freeze regarding his contract earlier this evening.

I asked specifically about the change with incentives, removal of bonus money awarded after SEC wins and more money guaranteed in base salary.

A $1 million raise s a pretty big bump. I know I’ve never had a raise that big.

To me, that’s a significant shift in financial strategy. It says, “We believe in this coach,” rather than “We’re hopeful, and we’re going to spend money carefully.”

Obviously coaches have agents – in the case of Freeze it’s Jimmy Sexton – to handle the details for them.

What was interesting was the Freeze, on the road recruiting, indicated that he knew very little of the details. He expressed great thanks to Ole Miss chancellor Dan Jones and AD Ross Bjork.

“Neither year did I go and ask for anything. I want to take care of my coaches. I am thrilled with Dr. Jones and Ross and the belief they have in us. That’s why we’re out here hoofing it trying to find more players. I just feel very blessed and thankful for the opportunity they gave me.”

According to the USA Today database of current salaries, $3 million a year puts Freeze eighth in the SEC.
