Updating the Vanderbilt coaching candidates. James Franklin’s departure has left Vanderbilt’s recruiting class in a bad way. As we linked early in the week he’s been accused of “pillaging” the class. ¬†USA Today’s Big Lead says the criticism is overblown and that Franklin has a responsibility to bring talent to Penn State. Vanderbilt commit Emmanuel Smith, a four-star safety, is one from the class that appears to be giving Ole Miss a good look now.

Franklin’s hire has gotten good reviews around Penn State with some analysts saying he’ll bring an “SEC mindset” to the Nittany Lions. …

Louisiana Tech basketball coach Michael White has the Bulldogs off to a 14-3 start which includes an overtime win at Oklahoma. The Bulldogs have won six straight but maintaining that pace could be a problem.
