Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart has apologized for shoving a Texas Tech fan. The fan has also apologized. He denies using a racial slur.

Court seating has been around a long time now. When it first appeared back in the late 1990s I thought we’d have seen more of these incidents by now.

Probably, there are more that push the envelope but don’t reach the level of what happened in Lubbock.

I can think of two such events that I’ve witnessed. One did not involve physical contact but was so intense, so clear that the intent was to draw a response from the player, that it should have resulted in admonishment of the fan but did not. The second involved a fan screaming at an official as officials ran off the court. It’s unclear if there was physical contact, but the fan was arrested. Neither of these events occurred at Ole Miss.

Courtside seating appeared as a new revenue stream at a time when it was becoming harder and harder to identify new streams.

It seems to be managed well in most places, but the responsibility for fan behavior does fall on the school. …

The best defensive player for SEC football in 2013 says he’s gay. Michael Sam talked to the University of Missouri’s local paper and other outlets Sunday evening. …

Video here of Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze discussing his signing class with CBSSports.com. I was getting my oil changed Friday morning when I got a text from freeze inviting local media to lunch that day at the new 1810 Grill at the Manning Center. It was a very enjoyable and informative discussion in a casual setting that we don’t often see. …

Tampa Bay Buc offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford has a history with Lane Kiffin and praise for Alabama’s new offensive coordinator. Speaking of Alabama, Bo Scarbrough was coveted as a running back, but Bleacher Report’s Barrett Sallee says he should play wide receiver for the Crimson Tide. …

Two Tennessee players were arrested over the weekend, one of them, LB A.J. Johnson, is called one of the top returning seniors in college football by NFL.com.

Bo as a wide receiver at ‘Bama? Wonder IF he’ll like that position? He could’ve been THE running back for the Rebels. Missed opportunity for Mr. Scarbrough IMHO.

Maybe Scarbrough decided he wanted to win a few national titles during his time in college. We’re still several years away from consistently pulling guys like him away from Bama, LSU, or other powerhouses. And that’s only IF we continue to build up our wins each year. After the way this year ended, I’m not so sure that will happen.

Maybe Bo will get to play…eventually. Then again, there are plenty ahead of him vying for playing time. At Ole Miss, he would have started right away.
As for the “way the season ended”…as far as I’m concerned, ending with a win over a good Georgia Tech team in the Music City Bowl and one win better (overall) than last year is a pretty good way to ‘end the season’ IMO. If you mean losing at M00-U in OT…that’s never acceptable…but Coach Freeze has the program going in the right direction. Don’t be such a pessimist.
