In addition to nine starters returning, Dave Wommack is excited to have new pieces and parts to work with for his Ole Miss defense.
“We’ve got like seven new guys who either weren’t eligible or transferred in. That changes your team. It gives you depth, keeps you fresh and does a lot of things. So you just stay healthy and keep getting better,” he said.
Wommack talks about the early days of spring drills here:
As he describes in the video, Wommack hasn’t hesitated to put his new guys in important roles. That’s not surprising with Anthony Alford, who has D1 experience from Southern Miss, but it tells you a little bit of what he thinks of guys new to college football like C.J. Hampton, a freshman and early enrollee from Meridian, and junior college transfer Christian Russell, a middle linebacker looking to replace Mike Marry.
Ole Miss finished seventh in total defense (370.5 ypg) and seventh in scoring defense (23.7 ppg) last season.
