Final: Ole Miss 6, MSU 1

You looked up in this game and saw Chris Ellis not working ahead in the count and giving up hits here and there — not rockets — but got the feeling he was on borrowed time.

But Ellis kept making pitches, and the Rebels kept hitting the Bulldogs’ ace, Ross Mitchell. Mitchell stayed in the game for 8.2 innings, but in the middle of the game it became about saving the MSU bullpen. In that aspect he was successful.

Mitchell went into the game with an opponent’s batting average of .198, and Ole Miss hit .351 against him with 13 hits.

Braxton Lee and Sikes Orvis each had two hits and two RBIs. Auston Bousfield, Brantley Bell and Errol Robinson also had two hits.

There was solid defense too. Ole Miss committed one error, a pop-up dropped by Preston Overbey, stunning because of his reliability. That gave MSU some life in the eighth, but Overbey made up for it by stabbing a line drive to get out of the inning. His error came right after a collision at second base when he applied the tag to Brett Pirtle who was trying to stretch a lead-off single into a double.

Here’s Robinson:

Video evidence right here that MSU and Ole Miss players can in fact get along, at least for a while.

The MSU players are Jacob Lindgren and Jonathan Holder.

We’re about an hour and a half from first pitch. Ole Miss will be without reliever Aaron Greenwood who is suffering from an abdominal ailment. Greenwood and his 19.1 scoreless innings streak did not make the trip.

The best pitcher in the SEC pitches for Sharkfins tonight.

  • karl Hungus

You will learn that Karl Hungus does know collegiate sports, especially baseball. Ellis only struck out one batter, but he only gave up “at ‘ems” when it came to hits. Sharkfins win today to set up sweep. This isn’t last year’s State team.

A win in Starkville is always sweet. I was surprised how easy it was. At least the Rebels will not be ‘swept’ by TSBU. It would be great for the Rebel RPI ranking (currently #9) to get one more win…hey, why stop there…get the sweep in their yard.

Game two will be easier to get than one….I’m telling ya it’ll be a Sharkfin sweep and none of the games will be close. Mississippi State is NOT that good. They had 7 players drafted last year…too many holes to fill.
