Updated football odds and ends

A few items of interest from the school’s updated spring football information which was emailed earlier this afternoon …

Important Dates: The tentative preseason calendar looks like this: July 17 at SEC Media Days, July 31 players report, Aug. 4 campus media day, Aug. 25 fall classes begin, Aug. 28 season opener vs. Boise State.

All-Star candidates: Suspended linebackers Serderius Bryant and Denzel Nkemdiche are both listed among nine players that the school is promoting for individual honors. Hugh Freeze indicated

The others are QB Bo Wallace, WR Laquon Treadwell, OL Laremy Tunsil, TE Evan Engram, DB Cody Prewitt, DL Robert Nkemdiche, DB Tony Conner.

Here’s what Freeze said about Bryant and Nkemdiche a month ago when the Rebel Road Trip visited Tupelo: “Both are doing exactly what we’ve put in place, so I’m pleased. The minute I jump out there and become very optimistic we could have a setback. I just know to this point they’re doing everything.”

Depth Chart Notes: The first depth chart includes Robert Conyers as the starter at right tackle with Chase Hughes as No. 2 center. Redshirt freshman Davion Johnson is behind Conyers at right tackle.

Fadol Brown is listed as a starter at one end and backed up by Carlos Thompson. The other end has C.J. Johnson backed up by Marquise Haynes.

Denzel Nkemdiche is currently listed third at the outside linebacker spot behind Bryant and Keith Lewis. Senior Cliff Coleman and sophomore Kailo Moore have an “or” between their names as both are listed behind Senquez Golson at field cornerback.

The “or” also appears between Mike Hilton and Derrick Jones at the No. 1 boundary corner, between Issac Gross and Woodrow Hamilton at the No. 1 nose tackle, between Collins Moore and Vince Sanders between one No. 1 wide receiver position, between DeVante Kincade and Ryan Buchanan at No. 2 QB and twice at running back between I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton at No. 1 and Mark Dodson and Jordan Wilkins after them.

Player Notes: What follows is commentary from the school’s position-by-position breakdown. “Derrick Jones (cornerback) made four starts as a freshman and has the potential to break out as a star this season.” … “Aaron Morris was limited in spring drills, but will return at left guard this fall after suffering a torn ACL in the season opener and missing all of the 2013 season. Other players to watch in the battle for playing time include Daronte Bouldin, Davion Johnson, Christian Morris and Carlton Martin.”

Here’s hoping neither State or black bears suffer any major injuries to any of their football players. What if the Egg Bowl was for the West title?

    • JB

Egg bowl?/ Ha! Don’t think so, as long as Alabama and LSU have football teams

  • howdy55

Hey, POOPDOG, I mean Nigel, from the looks of it you look like you fell face first in your own poop!!! Ha Ha

JB, you never know what can happen. Back in the day, the Yankees thought Wally Pipp would be their first baseman for a long time…then came that foul ball, opening up a spot for #4, Lou Gehrig.

Dang nigel/karl/cid/buell, that’s the quickest you’ve ever changed identities. You really need to get back on your meds. And btw, if you want to make it believable, don’t come in trying to curry favor with JB. Even though he’s not a “true” rebel ,he has change dto a gator fan, although in football the y suck almost as bad as state) he’s earned the right through years on this Earth to post whatever he wants.

Former black bear and present Carolina Panther, Greg Hardy has been arrested for assault. Panther management say his career is in jeopardy. Wasn’t he always in trouble in college?
