Wednesday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Wednesday morning …

A couple of notes from baseball’s 16-9 win over Arkansas State …

Offense had been erratic in three of the last four games. It was good to see the Rebels post some big numbers against a borderline top 50 RPI team.

The win will have more value if Arkansas State can climb into the top 50. For now, it simply gets the Rebels closer to 40 wins – It was their 38th of the season. A loss would have been more damaging to the RPI than a win is helpful right now.

There were some bright spots though, like 15 hits, one of them a grand slam from freshman Colby Bortles. The Rebels need Bortles to continue to develop and be in position to play a larger role next season.

J.B. Woodman had a pair of doubles, and Preston Overbey doubled and homered. It would be a real lift to the offense if Overbey began to produce a little more.

Evan Anderson threw three scoreless innings to start the game before giving up a couple of runs in the fourth, one of them unearned. He allowed three hits in 4.0 innings.

Hawtin Buchanan pitched and again struggled, giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning on three hits and two walks. That was the eighth, and the Rebels had a 16-4 lead at the time. Jacob Waguespack got the final out of the eighth, and Scott Weathersby pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Rebels begin their final SEC series tomorrow night at Texas A&M. The Aggies are hitting .271 against SEC teams, fourth in the league, and have a 4.36 ERA, 12th in the league.

Research has shown that college football stadiums that have started selling beer have had a 36% drop in alcohol related incidents. Less hard liquor being sneaked in. Needless to say their incomes also rose by seasonal average of $320,000.00. The home teams will jump at the chance to make that kind of money.

Ole Miss and Miss State, both got their work cut out for them this week in baseball Ole Miss to Blue Bell Park (College Station)where the Aggies are very hard to beat, Rebels lucky if the can come away with one victory, State could not be so lucky in Tuscaloosa. LSU is the team with nothing to loose and all to gain they sweep and could win the SEC West – in the SEC East Gators can put away the overall SEC race with one victory over Tenn and they will need some luck in doing that. Gators very good pitching but at the bat a bit weak HRs not there this season.

JB, that’s a good one. Followed Freeze’s group around…it was raining most of the round, He is a decent golfer. Joey Sindalar was 5 under after 9 holes…he is my bet to win the tournament this weekend. They stopped early when thunderstorms moved in.
