Based on reports coming out of Greenville, N.C., Ole Miss baseball assistant coach Cliff Godwin was set to be named the new head coach at East Carolina.
Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco confirmed that Godwin, the Rebels’ hitting instructor and ECU graduate, was in talks to become the Pirates’ new head coach Tuesday. He said it was hard to comment on Godwin’s status because there had been no official notice made.
Bianco did say it was for Godwin becoming a head coach and seemed hopefully for good news.
“If that’s their goal, to be a head coach, to do those things, that’s part of my job to help out. To me it’s similar, but a little different, for a guy that comes here to our program and wants to be a professional baseball player and wants to play in the major leagues,” Bianco said. “Yes, while you’re here, be the best college baseball player you can be and help Ole Miss try and win a national championship. But eventually what you do here will help you realize your goal and your dream. I hope that for the coaches and I hope that coaching in this system and in this program is going to help them realize their goal. It did for me as an assistant coach. And we want to help them in any way we can.”
An announcement on Godwin was expected as early as today.
