Darnell, Smith and different dinner reservations

Great Media Days story here from John Darnell. The former Ole Miss quarterback represented the Rebels here in 1989 along with Shawn Cobb.

Emmitt Smith was part of the Florida contingent that season. Smith would go on to join the Dallas Cowboys and become the NFL’s all-time rushing leader.

Here’s what Darnell remembers:

“We were there the day with Florida and Tennessee. I remember Emmit had No. 22 shaved into the back of his head.

I talked a lot about our offense and some new guys we had like Randy Baldwin and some guys we had coming back like Willie Green and Pat Coleman. I thought they were great players and would have a great year.

“There were a lot of cameras and a lot of people, but Langston Rogers, our SID, prepared us well, and it was a great experience for me.

“The SEC took us and the Tennessee players out to a nice dinner. I guess Emmitt had his own private dinner.”
